Patrick Campbell (Laurel Glen Winery)
Argentine Wine Project

The Jan/Feb 2009 issue of Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar contains an exhaustive 16 page coverage of Argentine wines, for which, he notes, he tried no fewer than 600 wines! Here’s what he had to say about ours (slightly abridged):

Vale la Pena 06 – “Bright medium ruby. Sappy aromas of crushed cassis, licorice pastille, bitter chocolate and graphite….impressively intense….this impeccably balanced, stylish wine seems quite effortless. A lovely and classic malbec that should gain in complexity over the next six to eight years.”

Tierra Divina 06 – “Good saturated ruby…..aromas of black fruits, menthol and licorice, with a whiff of exotic flowers. Chewy, dense black fruit flavors display a rather brooding quality but also a lush texture. Ripe but classically dry malbec, finishing with building but suave tannins.”

Terra Rosa 05 – “Good deep red….a hint of minerality…a fairly dense and serious wine, especially given the price. Finishes with sweet tannins and good length.”
What is perhaps more interesting are the retail prices of the comparative wines in the point ranges Tanzer bestowed on our wines. Here’s the summary:
  • TR price: $11. Average of all wines in point range: $26.60
  • TD price: $16. Average of all wines in point range: $45.00
  • VLP price: $32. Average of all wines in point range: $51.00
Do the math.
